Willard takes on Corn State Nationals and Gem City Showdown
The MARS Late Model Championship made stops at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway and Quincy (Illinois) Raceways from Friday through Sunday. Brennon Willard and his Willard Asphalt No. 3 Super Late Model team contested all three events and turned in their strongest showing of the weekend on Saturday night.
On both Friday and Saturday, the quarter-mile Davenport Speedway played host to the Corn State Nationals. Friday’s program paid $5,000 to the winner, while Saturday’s show included a $10,000 top prize. Thirty-two MARS Late Models were at the track each night.
On Friday, Willard was unable to transfer to the feature through his heat and finished 13th in his consolation race, ending his night before the 40-lap A-Main.
Saturday saw Willard again struggle in his heat race and B-Main, but he was able to earn a spot in the 40-lap finale. He started 22nd and finished 17th in the main event.
The weekend slate wrapped up on Sunday at Quincy Raceways with the Gem City Showdown. Willard, who was one of 19 MARS Late Model drivers at the quarter-mile track, did not start his heat. As a result, he began from shogun on the field in the 40-lap, $5,000-to-win feature. He climbed two positions to post a 17th-place result for the second consecutive night, despite being scored with a DNF.
Willard picked up one spot in the MARS Late Model Championship standings during the weekend and now sits in ninth position.
